Purpose.

This page contains few useful tips and tricks that may not be available on the websites somewhere else. We will post a brief descriptions of the problems and fixing scenarios as well as things such as default password for IP phones that we have encountered so users can bookmark it and use it whenever they need it. Instructions are formulated for semi advanced users.

Blackberry software v 4.7 on Vista Business 64 bit

While installing Blackbery Desktop Manager software ver 4.7 user may encounter problems. System installer might show error message saying that it may not have write access to decompress files into directory:

Before running installer create temp directory, for instance: if your main drive is labeled as c: then c:\temp is what's stopping this installation from being accomplished.

Blackberry as a tethered modem via Bluetooth. (Windows XP and Vista)

Note: The unlimited data plan is recommended if you want to use your Blackberry phone as a modem. Additional charges may apply. Check with your operator (who will probably tell you that additional plan is required in order to use it that way but lets just ignore it for now, well forever to be exact.) for details.After successful completion check your usage bill and see if there is no extra charges.

What's needed:

Blackberry phone 8830, 8330 ( these were the only ones tested ), service from provider (easy to figure out by the phone model) with data plan (preferably unlimited), laptop computer.

Successfully pair your phone with your laptop via Bluetooth.

Create dial-up connection that uses COM port based modem usualy with high number (standard modem 36000 kbps or so.)

Set the number to be dialed to #777 and your login and password are this same as when the phone was set up.

Enjoy the mobility.

Tip: Once successfuly connected, "MODEM MODE ENABLED" will be displayed on the screen.Phone should still be able to receive the calls. It will freeze the internet connection for the time being and we suggest to disconnect the modem during this time.

One more important thing: Don't try this at home, since you most likely have broadband connection anyway.

Update10-5-09

Does not work anymore with Sprint. They came out with great idea that customers have to downgrade their plan in order to be "honored" with such feature that will cost them extra amount a month. So if you have "Simply unlimited" plan it will not work. After downgrading you will get ability to use your Blackberry as a modem with limited transfer amount. Ain't that clever? As a business customers we are thrilled.
